Dice Tower Awards 2016

The Dice Tower awards were announced recently with some surprises appearing.

The Dice Towers Awards are for board games and card games from the previous year were revealed. Here are the categories:

  • Most Innovative Game
  • Best Two-Player Game
  • Best Theming
  • Best Strategy Game
  • Best Reprint of the Year
  • Best Party Game
  • Best Game from a Small Publisher
  • Best Game from a New Designer
  • Best Family Game
  • Best Expansion
  • Best Co-Op Game
  • Best Board Game Production
  • Best Artwork
  • Best Game of the Year

And now for the nominees and winners.

 

For Most Innovative Game the nominees were:

  • Clank! A deck-building adventure
  • Millennium Blade
  • Captain Sonar
  • Mystic Vale
  • Vast: The Crysta

Captain Sonar came out the winner.

In the category of Best Two-Player Game:

  • 13 Days: The Cuban Missile Crisis, 1962
  • Arkham Horror LCG: Core Set
  • Star Wars: Rebellion
  • Codex: Card-Time Strategy – Core Set
  • Star Wars: Destiny

With Star Wars: Rebellion winning.

The nominees for Best Theming we have:

  • Black Orchestra
  • Captain Sonar
  • Roll Player
  • SeaFall
  • Terraforming Mars

And Captain Sonar won.

In the category of Best Strategy Game we have:

  • A Feast For Odin
  • Great Western Trail
  • Star Wars: Rebellion
  • Terraforming Mars
  • Scythe

And Terraforming Mars winning.

Now for Best Reprint of the Year we have:

  • Robinson Crusoe: Adventures on the Cursed Island 2nd Edition
  • Arkwright
  • Mansions of Madness: 2nd Edition
  • Escape from the Aliens in Outer Space Ultimate Edition
  • 51st State: Master Set

Mansions of Madness: 2nd Edition was able to win this category.

For Best Party Game the nominees were:

  • Codenames: Pictures
  • Happy Salmon
  • Junk Art
  • Captain Sonar
  • Secret Hitler

Once again Captain Sonar was able to win.

In the category of Best Game from a Small Publisher:

  • Arkwright
  • Roll Player
  • Vast: The Crystal Caverns
  • Cottage Garden
  • Not Alone

With Roll Player winning.

The nominees for Best Game from a New Designer we have:

  • Vast: The Crystal Caverns
  • Terraforming Mars
  • Adrenaline
  • The Manhattan Project: Energy Empire
  • Kingdom Death Monster

And Terraforming Mars won that.

Now for Best Family Game there is:

  • Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle
  • Ice Cool
  • Karuba
  • Sushi Go Party!
  • Junk Art

Ice Cool was able to win this category.

In the category of Best Expansion:

  • 7 Wonders Duel: Pantheon Expansion
  • Scythe: Invaders from Afar Expansion
  • Stockpile: Continuing Corruption
  • I.M.E. Stories: A Prophecy of Dragons 7553 AT Expansion
  • I.M.E. Stories: Under the Mask -1146 NT Expansion

With 7 Wonders Duel: Pantheon Expansion winning.

The nominees for Best Co-Op Game are:

  • Arkham Horror LCG: Core Set
  • Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle
  • Mansions of Madness: 2nd Edition
  • Pandemic: Reign of Cthulhu
  • Mechs vs Minions

And Mansions of Madness: 2nd Edition is the winner.

For Best Board Game Production the nominees are:

  • Conan
  • The Others: 7 Sins: Core Game
  • Scythe
  • Star Wars: Rebellion
  • Mechs vs Minions

And Mechs vs Minions come off with the win.

 

In the category of Best Artwork we have:

  • Arkham Horror LCG: Core Set
  • Scythe
  • Inis
  • Islebound
  • Kanagawa

With Scythe being announced the winner.

And finally the nominees for Best Game of the Year are:

  • Terraforming Mars

  • Scythe

  • A Feast For Odin

  • Captain Sonar

  • Mechs vs Minions

  • Great Western Trail

  • Adrenaline

  • Star Wars: Rebellion

  • Cry Havoc

And Scythe was able to run off as the winner.

A few final thoughts. I don’t follow board games as closely as I should so I was a bit surprised Captain Sonar won so many awards. Somehow Terraforming Mars, Ice Cool, and Scythe were able to win last year and this year. That was a big surprise.
